Prove Portugal

Portuguese wines have a unique quality, derived mainly from a climate favourable for their production, with hot sun, heavy rains and cool winds from the Atlantic.

Unique in its essence, the national wine unfolds in diverse styles, such as red, white, rosé and muscatel. Port from the Douro region, is one of the most famous Portuguese wines, with a very high export level. Also particular of Portugal, is the category of green wine, from the Minho region. Red or white, this wine is characterized by strong levels of acidity. Apart from the Douro and Minho, there are the wine regions of Trás-os-Montes, Beiras, Lisbon, Tagus, Sado, Alentejo, Algarve, Madeira and the Azores. You can learn more about these regions (and their DOs) and the country's local grape varieties on the website of ViniPortugal.

Portuguese wines have a consistent place in the most important international wine competitions. In 2010 many of them won gold medals, including the International Wine Challenge, in the Decanter World Wine Awards and in the IWSC – International Wine & Spirit Competition (United Kingdom), in the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (Belgium), in the Vinalies Internationales (France) and in the Berliner Wein Trophy (Germany).

The "Sala Ogival de Lisboa" and the "Sala Ogival do Porto" of ViniPortugal are places where you can enjoy Portuguese wines for free, from the best producers and variety of regions. With respect to wines from Oporto, be sure to be in the right place. To taste them, try for example the Lisbon Solar and the Porto Solar from the IVDP (Port and Douro Wines Institute).

The styles of Portuguese wines are so varied that it is impossible not to find a bottle that matches perfectly with any delicacy. Kathryn Metcalfe gives us valuable clues about matching wine with food in a text that you can read here (text assigned by ViniPortugal).
